“Aquilaria sinensis Reke1” Certified

     Recently, “Aquilaria sinensis Reke1”, a new variety selected by Agarwood research team, TBBRI got a variety recognition by Hainan Forest Varieties Approval Committee, and obtained the certificate of improved material of forest tree.

     The new variety is suitable for planting in Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, and other provinces in South China. It has the characters of “Agarwood production easier, high yield and superior quality”, etc. After the trunk of this new variety injured, the yellowish-brown Agarwood substances are formed quickly. As time go on, the color of Agarwood substances deepened, and the size of Agarwood formed around the wound became large and larger. Under the same conditions of Agarwood production, the yield of this variety was 30 % higher than that of common Aquilaria sinensis. Under the conditions of the same locality, the same age, the same position, the same method of generating Agarwood, and taking out Agarwood at the same time, the content of the characteristic components of Agarwood of “Aquilaria sinensis Reke1” was significantly high than that of the common Aquilaria sinensis. The average content of 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromone extracted from Agarwood of the new variety was 4.6 times higher than that of the conventional variety.

     The Agarwood research team (TBBRI) led by Prof. Dai Hao-fu strengthened cooperation with the Agarwood Association of Huazhou City, many cooperatives and companies in Hainan. It took about 22 years for breeding the new variety of Aquilaria sinensis by maternal selection, breeding garden establishment, introduction and domestication, regional test, biological characters evaluation, Agarwood production evaluation, molecular evaluation, DUS (Distinctness, Uniformity, Stability) test, grafting propagation and other means, before “Aquilaria sinensis Reke1” was officially named.
The new variety has high commercial value and attractive prospect. The Agarwood generated by “Aquilaria sinensis Reke1” can be used to producing high quality ornaments, hand string, essential oil, incense stick and so on.
