Domestic Specialists of Plant Virus Diseases Visit TBBRI for Academic Exchanges

     At the invitation of TBBRI, Professor Shifang Li, senior scientist of Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Dr. Zhen He from the School of Horticulture and Plant Protection of Yangzhou University visited TBBRI for academic exchanges on January 5th, 2017. Presentations were given and were chaired by Dr. Peng Zhou, deputy director of TBBRI.

     In the morning, Prof. Shifang Li made two academic presentations entitled " Transgenic research of broad-spectrum antivirals of plant anti-virus” and “High-throughput sequencing technology (Next-generation sequencing) application in plant virus identification” respectively. In his first presentation, Prof. Li introduced the pac-1 gene from yeast which showed the spectrum resistance to double stranded RNA viruses of plant. He also revealed the mechanism and the research and development prospects in transgenic research of plant anti-virus. In his second presentation, Prof. Li lucidly explained how to apply new generation sequencing technology in the identification of a variety of plant virus from the diseased plants through deep sequencing in their research work.


 
     The presentations were responded with heatedly discussions from the audience of researchers working with related fields of plant virus in TBBRI about the application research of pac-1 gene, the technical problem of sequencing data analysis, the identification method of newly discovered virus and the application prospect of plant anti-virus research.

     In the afternoon, Prof. Li gave some tips of his successful experience in the application to National Natural Science Foundation in dozens of years, including project proposal planning, topic selection, proposal writing, and some practical and effective suggestions, methods and skills in the application to National Natural Science Foundation.

     Prof. Li have long been engaged in research on plant virus, viroid identification, population structure and sequence diversity analysis, interaction of viroid and host, safety of anti-virus transgenic plant and biological control of peach crown gall disease and so on. From 2010, he becomes the post scientist of virus disease prevention and control in Modern Agricultural Industry Technology System of Peach. So far, he chaired 9 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, participate in the projects of “973 program”,  “863 program”, Special Fund for Agro-scientific Research in the Public Interest and other projects. He has published more than 70 papers in Journal of General Virology, Virology, PLoS One, Archives of Virology, Virus Research, Journal of Plant Pathology, FEBS Open Biology and other important journals of virology.

 
 

     Dr. He made an academic presentation entitled “The population structure and molecular variation analysis of sugarcane streak mosaic virus(SCSMV)”. He introduced his research achievements of sugarcane streak mosaic virus, and did indepth communication with the researchers of sugarcane research center in TBBRI.
 
 
     Dr. He mainly engaged in the detection and identification of plant virus diseases, including the research of population genetics of plant virus, phylogenetics and mechanism of molecular epidemiology, and gene function and pathogenesis of plant virus. He chaired a project of the National Natural Science Foundation for Young Scholars, project of the Fund for colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province, open project of State Key Laboratory for Biology of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests, respectively. He has published 9 papers in Virus Research, Plant Disease, Archives of Virology and other journals collected by SCI.
