On January 17, 2024, Colombo witnessed the conclusion of the 2023 work summary meeting for the China-FAO Sri Lanka South-South Cooperation Project.

The occasion was hosted by Ms. Shiromani Edirimanne, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture of Sri Lanka. Dr. Sun Dequan, representing the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, or CATAS, delivered a report. Since March 2023, guided by project experts, Sri Lanka has greatly enhanced the efficiency of banana tissue culture seedling propagation and introduced banana inflorescence tissue culture technology, underpinning its large-scale production of sterile banana seedlings in vitro. Additionally, the completion of high-standard production demonstration parks for mango, banana, and pineapple has led to a substantial improvement in seedling quality and a notable reduction in pests and diseases, laying a robust foundation for increasing yields and quality. The expert team conducted 18 technical training in Sri Lanka, educating 550 technical personnel, young students, and farmers. Based on project objectives and Sri Lanka's specific needs, relevant scientific research institutions have undergone equipment upgrades, paving the way for tropical agriculture's globalization.

The China-FAO Sri Lanka South-South Cooperation Project, funded by the China-FAO South-South Cooperation Trust Fund, aims to enhance the production and commercialization of key fruit value chains, such as bananas, pineapples, and mangoes in Sri Lanka, bringing innovative technologies and experiences into the country's agricultural sector. CATAS has dispatched eight experts to Sri Lanka to carry out this mission.
