Recently, the research group of excellent and rare fruit trees in Haikou Experimental Station of the Chinese Academy of Thermal Sciences has made important progress in the field of agricultural waste recycling, summarized a series of research achievements in the synthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from agricultural waste in recent years, described the application prospects of agricultural waste as potential carbon raw materials to produce PHA, and provided important work ideas and technical references for the comprehensive utilization of agricultural waste.

PHA is the general name of a class of polymer polyesters produced by microorganisms using a variety of carbon sources. It has good biocompatibility, biodegradability and thermoplasticity. It can be decomposed by microorganisms in almost any environment (compost, soil, seawater). It has been widely used in the production of biomedical materials and degradable plastics. However, the high production cost and instability of PHA hinder its commercialization. The synthesis of PHA from agricultural wastes such as crop straw and pericarp can effectively solve the problems of comprehensive utilization of wastes and how to develop ecological friendly biomaterials, with broad prospects for development. The research systematically reviewed the important research progress in the field of using agricultural wastes to synthesize PHA in recent years, introduced in detail the production efficiency and technical methods of synthesizing PHA from straw, peel, sugar residue and other different sources of wastes, summarized the role, characteristics and technical bottlenecks of physical, chemical, biological and other pretreatment measures in the synthesis of PHA from agricultural wastes, and compared starch, lignin The technologies related to the composite modification of cellulose and other different components with PHA, the biocompatibility, thermal stability, gas barrier and other properties of the modified composite materials were evaluated and analyzed, the opportunities and challenges related to the field of agricultural waste synthesis of PHA materials were proposed, and the future technical needs and research directions were prospected.

Main Research Direction of Industrialization Development of Synthetic PHA from Agricultural Wastes

The relevant research achievements were published in Biosource Technology under the title of "Agro waste as a potential carbon feedstock for poly-3-hydroxyalkanoates production: Commercialization potential and technical trees". Ding Zheli, associate researcher of the excellent and rare fruit tree research group of Haikou Experimental Station, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, was the first author of the paper, and Mukesh, associate professor of the School of Resources and Environment, Northwest University of Agriculture and Forestry, was the corresponding author, The research was supported by the national high-end foreign experts introduction plan and other projects.
