On October 10, the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, the Chinese Embassy in Kiribati and the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce, Industry and Cooperation of Kiribati jointly held an online exchange activity for the development of coconut industry in the outer islands of Kiribati. Mr. Nawan, Minister of Commerce of Kiribati, Zhao Jian, Charg é d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Kiribati, and Liu Guodao, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Thermal Sciences, attended the meeting and delivered speeches. Representatives from the Ministry of Commerce of Kiribati, the Coconut Development Company, the Foreign Affairs Office of Zhaoqing City, Guangdong Province, the Coconut Research Institute of the CATAS, and domestic coconut processing equipment manufacturers attended the meeting.

Zhao Jian said in his speech that coconuts are the tree of life, and coconuts are also the main source of income for the people of the Kiwai Islands. The Kiwai government attaches great importance to the development of the coconut industry and proposes a diversified strategy for coconut products and exports. This time, experts from CATAS put forward plans and suggestions for the diversification of coconut products in Kiewai Island based on the experience of the comprehensive utilization of China's coconut industry. The Embassy will also work with the Ministry of Commerce of Kiewai to promote the early realization of this plan. Since the resumption of diplomatic ties, the two countries have made fruitful achievements in infrastructure, people's livelihood and sustainable development. The Chinese government is willing to support the development of the basic coconut as a pillar industry, improve the independent and sustainable development ability of the basic coconut, improve the living standard of the people, and help the basic coconut to achieve the 20-year development planning goal (KV20).

Minister Nawan thanked the Chinese government for its support to the development of the coconut industry, saying that the coconut industry is rich in resources and has great potential to enhance the added value of the coconut industry. For a long time, the company only uses coconut to produce coconut oil, which restricts the comprehensive utilization of coconut and the improvement of employment opportunities. In the future, it is hoped that China will continue to support the development of the whole industrial chain of base coconut, provide more technical support and skills training for base coconut, improve the variety and quality of coconut products, and realize the diversification of base coconut products and exports.

Vice President  Dr. Liu Guodao introduced the technical advantages of CATAS in the whole industrial chain of tropical crops, including coconuts, and proposed a plan for future industrial development according to the actual needs of the basic coconut industry. In the future, we hope to continue to work together with the embassy and the Kishore side to translate the program into practical results.

Dr. Zhang Yufeng, from the Coconut Research Institute of CATAS, introduced China's advanced technology in the field of coconut planting, production and processing. In combination with the actual situation of the coconut resources and power supply in the outer islands of Kiribati, he proposed a product plan for the production of coconut paste, coconut bran bricks, coconut shell carbon, coconut shell buttons and other products, as well as suggestions on production equipment and workshops, and showed the basic party videos about the production and processing of equipment. The participants from the base side listened carefully to the Chinese experts' proposal, and said that through this online activity, they had a new understanding of the development of the coconut industry in the Outer Islands. In the future, they hoped to strengthen cooperation with China on the basis of this proposal, promote the development of the value chain of the coconut industry in the Outer Islands, and improve the well-being of the people in the Outer Islands.
