On May 14, a delegation led by Alfred Michael Sears, Minister of Immigration and National Insurance of the Bahamas, who was in China to attend the 4th Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, visited the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) for research and discussions. Li Jihua, Vice President of CATAS, attended the forum, and the two sides held in-depth dialogues on cooperation in the field of tropical agriculture.
Li Jihua extended a warm welcome to the Bahamian delegation. He pointed out that Hainan Island and some islands of the Bahamas share a tropical marine climate. As peers in the development of island agriculture, CATAS values the existing cooperation bonds between the two sides. It will deepen alignment in the field of tropical agriculture, explore resilient agricultural development paths in response to climate challenges faced by island countries, and make scientific and technological cooperation a new driver for agricultural cooperation between the two countries.
Alfred Michael Sears spoke highly of the scientific and technological achievements made by CATAS. He expressed the expectation of introducing successful management experience in the integration of industry, academia, and research, and jointly exploring development paths that are compatible with local tropical agriculture and tourism, so as to promote economic growth, consolidate the food security defense line, and achieve sustainable economic and ecological development.
Before the forum, the delegation visited the Exhibition Hall of CATAS. Relevant personnel from the Embassy of the Bahamas in China, the Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Provincial Party Committee, and the person in charge of the International Cooperation Office of CATAS attended the forum.
