Of the 138 tropical countries and regions worldwide, most are developing nations that serve as key areas for the Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Development Initiative, giving tropical agricultural science a distinct diplomatic and developmental edge, officials said.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), CATAS signed or renewed 33 cooperation agreements with international organizations and overseas research institutions, raising its total global partners to 150. It also added 15 new national- and provincial-level cooperation platforms and now operates 34 overseas demonstration bases.
The academy took on the task of introducing and cultivating date palm seedlings gifted by the United Arab Emirates, with production trials underway across 14 cities and counties in Hainan, Yunnan and Sichuan through 18 specialized trial bases. In agricultural mechanization, CATAS exported 612 cassava and sugarcane machinery units to 31 countries. It also trained 2,600 agricultural technicians from 80 Global South nations and provided core technical support for the Food and Agriculture Organization's "One Country One Priority Product" initiative.
The academy's long-term partner, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture, received China's National Prize for International Science and Technology Cooperation. CATAS itself earned the FAO's "Global Technical Recognition for South-South and Triangular Cooperation".
For the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), CATAS said it will focus on building a comprehensive international science and technology cooperation system, advancing high-standard global innovation, attracting international talent, improving operations at the FAO Reference Center for Research and Training on Tropical Agriculture, and expanding overseas technology demonstrations.
"We will further expand cooperation across tropical regions worldwide, deepen innovation collaboration and break new ground in international scientific and technological cooperation for tropical agriculture," the academy said in a statement.
